martian gardener

The Martian Gardener series re-examine notions of modernism, such as: utopia, progress and functionality, together with the prospect of the future colonisation of planet Mars. The imagery, which questions the possibilities for nature in human constructed environments, steps further away from Russian constructivism though the choices and combinations of materials and the emergence of the figurative from the abstract. The recycled boards covered in second-hand printed textiles (visible on the edges), add to the objectness of the paintings and reveals their feminine character. The proportions and the size of the boards, the frame left around the images and the shiny circles in the middle are reminiscent of Russian Icons.
